SCHOOL VISIT

The “Presidente Calles” Elementary is a school where most families to this children are changing their living from forest benefits to family avocado farms. The school and their homes are located at the bottom of the mountain sides to Sanctuary “El Rosario”, at one of the starting points towards the largest of all Sanctuaries. The message that the symbolic migration has brought to children and students in this school has been of great relevance, since even thought the avocado farms are several kilometers away from the Monarch Sanctuaries, These farms could not be successful at higher levels, since avocados would not grow at colder temperatures than they are now. “Avocados did not use to grow here, when our parents were children, they tell us every time”, —children mentioned in the class, “neither a few other fruits we have now that only grew at warmer areas”, they added, to which Estela responded: “Well, protecting our forests is basic to whatever living activity in our region, since this guarantees the water storage and protection of flora and fauna of our local habitat; additional to this, cultivating our local fruits by encouraging population of pollinator insects and the used of organic fertilizers and compostas would be a better and long-term option, That avocado and other fruits now grow in our region is a clear signal of climate change, which is a rather bad signal of what is going on with nature”, —Estela concluded—. Children enjoyed immensely the fact of going over the different species of pollinators in our local fauna and loved the idea to observe them closer to get to know their behaviour and wonderful contribution to local habitat.
