SCHOOL VISIT.-

Dear friends, this school we are visiting today, and the following visits to the next coming 4 schools, —in total three middle and three elementary—, are all located at the opposite side to “El Rosario” Sanctuary’s entrance, from the other side we had been doing our visits up to now. Two main roads, opposite to each other, lead up to the very top of the highest mountain peaks, where the starting point to the colonies of Monarchs leads to in this, the largest Sanctuary of all. Well, the name of the location of this first school on this side, is “Cerro Prieto”, located at let’s say, 2.5 kilometers from the Monarch Sanctuary “El Rosario”. “Cerro Prieto” community/location, belongs —as all our former locations and schools visited up to now—, to “El Rosario” main political head (from where the Sanctuary takes its name). “Cerro Prieto” has got one Middle school (our visit today) and one Elementary school. Middle school terms last three years in order for students to be ready to go onto high school level. Middle schools start classes at 8 in the morning and end up at 2 in the afternoon. No formal luch service is available at school, so, at breaktime, students shall eat lunch either if packed at home, or buy a snack at school at breaktime. Today, at 10 Centigrade, teachers and students lighted up a coal-rustic “anafre or bracero”, to warm up themselves for some minutes, while the mayority would just never mind being outside in the chilly day. The subjects for students at this level are Language and Communication, Maths (Algebra and Geometry), Biology, Chemistry, Phisics, History, Geography, Social Sciences, English (students end up this level able to construct rather very basic, simple sentences), and sports. Teachers at middle school levels in our small locations should each teach every subject to the same one single grade they are assigned from the beginning to the end of the school year; Teacher’s profile can be either technical-university level on different fields and shall attend certain training from the state to teach each subject, including English. Disciplines like music or dancing, are unfortunately not part of our public elementary, middle or high school system, in spite of our so rich diversity on typical local music and dancing from all over the different regions throughout our country. Our topic on threatened, endangered and extinct species was really welcome; Students were surprised to hear that animals like deer and road-runners are now extinct and others like the salamandras (ajolotes), are endangered. “Monarchs were at least threatened a few years ago, but now, they seem to be really okay!.”, —several of them assured—. .”By law, many of us will become the future Ejidatarios, just as our parents and grandparents are now (owners of the benefits of our own land area); we want to assure our own future, as our parents tell us; thank you for bringing us these lessons on conservation, and please thank the teachers and students there in the north, since they think of us and share reflections with us for our life and our future in all three countries sharing the Monarch butterflies”, — several students expressed in recognition to the Symbolic Migration—, making these words the goal of the program be fullfilled at contributing to education on conservation to these new generations taking over within the next years as Ejidatarios. . At the end of our visit, a great excitment filled the athmosphere while some spoke about the contents of the topic of the visit, the “game of life” played, the writing of their letters to their northern friends telling them about our local plant and animal species, —specially those threatened or endangered or extinct already—, and of course, among the best, receiving their northern Ambassador Monarchs coming from so many different regions in the United States illustrating how life for Monarchs there as well as for her counterpart students there is, happy that the rain allowed us to come back out after it stopped us at the beginning making us run into the classrooms for a while!.
