SCHOOL VISIT-

Dear friends,

We are today closing a first segment of our visits of the season having covered the whole middle and elementary schools surrounding “El Rosario” Sanctuary, tha largest in terms of population of Monarchs registered every season up to now. “El Rosario” middle school, is located right at the center of the community itself, and is only some hundreds of meters away from the main entrance to the Monarchs’ colony and has got around 350 students!. What about technologies used at schools in our communities surrounding the Sanctuaries?. The block of subjects students attend at middle school level, include English at a very basic focus managing that students build simple sentences and vocabulary once they end up and get ready to go to high school. Unfortunately, on the other side, and speaking about technologies, our public both elementary and middle schools have up to now, not been equipped with computers rooms and trained teachers in the subject, the same as for English as a subject. A few intents have failed the moment the state has tried to train teachers teaching a certain grade, to teach English and computers as well, besides all of the other subjectst. The result has been incipient up today, in spite of English and computers having been declared as mandatory among subjects in our public system. Other times, the state declares itself with no funds enought to grant such a demand. High populated locations like “El Rosario”, have got a small internet public service, and many children simply go there and pay half a dollar for one hour to sit and learn by themselves how to navigate in the net; some of them (a minority) have got a cell phone (forbidden at schools), and access facebook if a cel phone at home is available. Accesing internet, printing a color or black-white image or learning how to use an office program is not yet a consistent part of our public education in very small locaton like ours. This is just getting started in a few public schools in larger towns and in most public schools in bigger cities. A computer at home in families in this small surroundings would be very rare to be seen. Internet connection might be not affordable and worthwhile for most families, besides. These students will have the chance to sit at a computer at school until they reach high school level where English and Computers have been implemented with much more success. Our internet service is provided mainly by one private company and the lowest rate to pay for the signal reception is 20 dollars a month. There is, indeed, an old debt on education by our state in these far away locations at the Monarch Sanctuaries. Our topic on protection and conservation through the “Web of Life” game, our reference poster on endangered polinators, books and illustrations on our endangered species in the region, continues to be a hit at schools which end full of enthusiasm at noticing that we are still on time to rescue and to protect our natural local species!.
