The Symbolic Migration goes back north to continue this exciting Ambassador tour around the large Oyamel forests surrounding “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary. Arriving at the “11 de Julio” Elementary in the “Palo Amarillo” Ejido and community, allows us the opportunity to appreciate wonderful, dense Oyamel fir forests.

Families living in the communities surrounding this Oyamel nucleus at Sierra Chincua have always wondered:

“Why have Monarchs been occupying the same forest spots of Oyamel trees every winter for decades now?”

“Many of our great-grandparents still living here in our “Palo Amarillo” community, assure us that monarch butterflies used to form at least small colonies at our Oyamel tree forest areas. But nowadays no trace of such roosts remain in spite of the forest being much denser.”

“We, of course, will continue to guard our natural beauty. Maybe someday monarchs will decide to leave their traditional overwintering spots and move around.”

“Meanwhile, our forests continue to provide so many benefits.”

“They protect all pollinators, prevent land erosion, filter water, provide us with food, retain water, are huge protection walls…and are the winter home for Monarchs!”

“It is wonderful to see with a simple didactic demonstration how our Oyamel forests are like a large sponge keeping our ecosystem living for hundreds of years!”

…teachers and students expressed.
