The visits of the Symbolic Migration project to the communities surrounding the monarch sanctuaries have been welcomed again this season.
Our lesson on “the benefits of trees and the importance of forest conservation” comes at a moment that is vital for our local society. The conservation of our Oyamel forests must be of paramount importance. Any agricultural practice which puts pressure on our ancestral ecosystem’s equilibrium should be tempered.
Dear participants, observe the first photo in our gallery section.
As the Symbolic Migration reached “José Clemente Orozco” Kindergarten, located at a considerably high altitude and at only a few kilometers from the monarch roosts at the “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary, our camera captured these images right alongside the road. They show how we are facing a new challenge, the slow but steady progression of avocado and blackberry plantations.
Climate change is transforming our winters in Angangueo, making them much shorter, warmer, and intermittent. This is allowing the growth of such semi-tropical fruits at high altitudes, a concept that would have been impossible to imagine even 15 years ago.
It is critical that conservation concepts on the uniqueness and vitalness of our ancestral forests are taught. Besides being the winter home of the monarchs, our forests provide for us so many resources and benefits. Every child, every family, every community must share the responsibility of protecting our forests and make a commitment to this end.
The delivery of your Ambassador Monarchs brings a whole world of knowledge to share with our children and teachers about monarchs and other marvels of nature.
Look at the amazing data this Ambassador in the gallery was showing! Our teachers were fascinated by Estela’s translation of its content!
Here little children living in the “Nicolás Romero” community, one of the closest hillsides to “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary, are learning how special the Oyamel forests are for monarchs, and how every animal and plant existing in our forests performs an extremely important job every day!
