No other planet in our solar system has the abundant water resources of Earth. Two-thirds of the surface of our planet is covered with water. 97% of Earth’s water is salt water (saline) and only 3% is fresh water found in our springs, rivers, and lakes.
Why is the ocean salty?
Rainwater that falls on the land is slightly acidic, eroding rocks and releasing ions (salts) that flow into rivers and streams eventually making it to the ocean. The concentration of these ions builds up over time, making the ocean salty.
“We are so lucky to have fresh water in our streams and lakes and huge water deposits and underground rivers running below us! We could have never imagined that!” students shouted.
A delicious lunch was prepared by the students’ moms in the school kitchen that consisted of lentils and sausages with fruit water to drink. What a welcome reward after our wonderful class!

Porqué son salados los mares?
El agua de lluvia que cae a la tierra, es ligeramente ácida y erosiona las rocas que a su vez sueltan iones (sales) que dan a los ríos y arroyos que se dirigen hacia los océanos. La concentración de estos iones se concentra poco a poco salando el agua de los mares.
