Towns and villages below our high mountains receive their water, running by gravity to a large collection tank where it is then piped to a room where it moves a Payton turbine, generating power. There in the turbine room, water is treated with chlorine. Health authorities keep strict watch over this process with the risk of high fines to local authorities if disinfection is not accomplishedaccording the the strict established regulations.
During our class today, the donated books illustrated so much information. We thank author Barb Rosenstock for sharing her book “The Mystery of the Monarchs: How Kids, Teachers, and Butterfly Fans Helped Fred and Norah Urquhart Track the Great Monarch Migration.”
From this book, we learned how a Canadian scientist and his wife, Fred and Nora Urquhart, “discovered” the first Sanctuary at Cerro Pelón 50 years ago. They designed the original tag and recruited “citizen scientists” to help them make this discovery. The tag is similar to the one used today through Monarch Watch. Many of our parents recover these tags as part of this continuing research project.

Ciudades y pueblos ubicados al pie de nuestras montañas, reciben el agua que llega por gravedad al gran tanque donde se entuba a un cuarto donde mueve una turbina Payton que a la vez genera electricidad. Ahí en el cuarto de turbina se trata el agua con cloro. Las autoridades sanitarias guardan un estricto control en este proceso con el riesgo de aplicar severas multas a las autoridades locales si su desinfección no se lleva al cabo de acuerdo a las estrictas regulaciones establecidas.
Durante nuestra clase hoy, nuestros libros donados nos ilustraron mucha información. Agradecemos a la escritora Barb Rosenstock por compartir su libro “The Mystery of the Monarchs: Como chicos, maestros y fans de las mariposas ayudaron a Fred and Norah Urquhart a seguir la pista de la Gran Migración de las Monarcas. “
De este libro aprendimos como Fred y Nora Urquhart descubrieronel primer Santuario en “Cerro Pelón” hace 50 años.
