“PUENTECILLAS” NEIGHBORHOOD, ZIRÁHUATO VILLAGE

AMBASSADORS: 219-253

COORDINATES: 19.5064739. -100.4052888

Productive Ziráhuato is located at only 25-30 kilometers from the high and rather cold coniferous forests of Sierra Chincua and El Rosario Sanctuaries at 1,000 meters  l o w e r  in elevation.  This location has been officially ranked among the 10 best climates IN THE WORLD.

Our legendary lake and mountains have provided water for centuries for our local, native wild fruits. Our great-great- and great grandpas used to sell fruits in surrounding towns to make a living, like ciruelas, nísperos, guavas, zapotes, chirimoyas, granadas, creole avocados, creole maize, tomatoes, sour lemon… all of them growing wild in our backyard patios,”  students proudly numbered in chorus to Estela.

“There is one main element complementing water abundance in Ziráhuato without which the abundance of natural life and food would not be possible”, Estela challenged students to guess: SOIL  NUTRIENTS!.

Layered in HORIZONS, from bed-rock to subsoil, to topsoil to the surface litter, the uppermost layers are home to the soil community. Ziráhuato’s surface litter shall be exceptionally rich in nutrients, -bacteria, mushrooms, insects, worms, etc.- which combined with excellent weather and optimal amounts of water, make of your homeland a unique place in our region!” Estela explained as she led them reading their SOIL sheet and SOIL book’s graphic illustration.

“That should be why Monarchs pass by our fields down on their arrival and up in their return! They should love to have so much nectar finding so many flower’s flavours!”, children shouted.

Can you tell the name of a few of some of our native ancestral wild fruits? Do you have any of these where you live?
