Our SOIL at the high altitudes where Monarchs overwinter at over 10,000 feet elevation, is not as productive as the soil where Sanctuary Cerro Pelón is, at a much lower elevation.
“At our high altitude and rather cold climate most of the year we are prominent farmers on the most delicious potatoes you can ever taste, the Alfa Potatoes. We also cultivate our WHITE and BLUE-RED corn, which are part of our creole, ancestral corn seeds, edible and main part of our family diet.”.
“Another main living for our families consists of raising cattle, sheep (seldom goats), hens, turkeys and rabbits, partly for family consumption, partly for local and regional commerce.” students stated proudly.
Similar to our past school visit, where students could recognize most of our wild plants, today they directly recognized our most common mammals living around our beloved Monarchs in our Oyamel forests:
“Armadillos, skunks, racoons, deer, badgers, wild cats, mice, bats!” The brochures were donated by Monarch Butterfly Fund through the Monarchs Across Georgia México Book Project.

“Armadillos, zorrillos, mapaches, venados, tejones, tlacuaches, gatos monteses, ratones y murciélagos! Woooow!. Gritaban sorprendidos los alumnos.
Los folletos fueron donados por Monarch Butterfly Fund a través de the Monarchs Across Georgia México Book Project.
