”A Female hummingbird builds her nest and lays 2-3 eggs. Little ones abandon the nest within one month.”

”Female Monarch butterflies lay around 400 eggs. It takes 30 days for an egg to become an adult Monarch.”

”Queen bees lay around 2,000 eggs!”

“Living in a group with members of the same species requires rules to manage to live together, having a system that allows for good coordination. Social bees live in this perfect organization!”

“There are three types of adult bees in a hive: Workers, Drones, and Queen Bees.”

“Queen Bees lay their eggs in the honeycomb. Larvae hatch out of the eggs. Worker Bees feed them with pollen and honey. They seal the cell with wax until the larva grows into an adult bee.”

“Worker Bees or females begin their careers as cleaners, then they are promoted to feeding the larvae. Later on, they can receive the nectar and pollen brought by forager bees. They also repair the comb or guard the entrance to the hive. They live longer and can survive the winter, since they mostly stay in the hive”.

“Drones or male bees live much more easily. They do not work or gather food. They only fertilize the Queen, and then die immediately. Workers push them out of the hive when food becomes scarce.”

“The content on the life of pollinator insects in OUR DONATED BOOKS is just incredible! We had heard some facts about bees, but they were always sacarce and somewhat confusing. Today we could spend hours reading all this!” some students commented.

CURIOUSLY, beekeeping is an activity that our local communities in these high elevations, where Monarchs overwinter, do very little. It is in villages at lower elevations where beekeeping is more common. It may be because of our very cold climate, or the 100 years of mining in the region, that this alternative way to make a living was not chosen.

“Las Abejas Reynas ponen sus huevecillos en un panal. Las larvas salen del huevo. Las Obreras los alimentan con polen y miel. Luego sellan la celda con cera hasta que la larva se convierte en una abeja adulta.”

“Las Obreras o hembras comienzan sus carreras como limpiadoras, luego ascienden a alimentar la larva. Más tarde pueden recibir el néctar y el polen traído por las abejas forrajeras. Ellas tambien reparan el panal ó vigilan la entrada al panal. Ellas viven más tiempo y pueden sobrevivir en el invierno puesto que se quedan dentro del panal.”

“Los Drones ó machos viven más relajadamente. Ellos no trabajan para recolectar comida. Ellos solo fertilizan a las Reynas y mueren enseguida. Las Obreras los sacan del panal cuando la comida escasea.”

“¡El contenido de la vida de los polinizadores en nuestra DONACIÓN DE LIBROS es simplemente increíble! Ya habíamos escuchado sobre las abejas, pero siempre resultaba escasa y un poco confuso. ¡Hoy podríamso pasar horas leyendo todo esto!” comentaron los estudiantes.

CURIOSAMENTE, la Apicultura es una actividad que nuestras comunidades locales en estas regiones altas donde hibernan las Monarcas, se practica muy poco. Se incrementa en poblados mas abajo en elevación donde se vuelve un poco más común. Pudiera ser por nuestro clima tan frío, o por los 100 años de minería en nuestra región que ésta alternativa de vida no se practicaba.
