"Lazaro Cárdenas"
SCHOOL VISIT.-
The symbolic migration is now very close to ending the visits to the schools around “El Rosario” Sanctuary. “Lázaro Cárdenas” Elementary today, has been one more elementary before the last couple of schools we will visit in the area before we move onto the area surrounding the “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary.. Our topic on threatened, endagered and extinct species in our local ecosystem, has indeed awakened reflections and enthusiasm in our children to reinforce small different conservation actions in their every-day life. At 2-3 schools including this one, children have shown concern on the possibility that our local ecosystem could continue loosing a few more species than we have already lost. “What about dinosaurs and mammuts, did they dissappear in the same way we have lost our more recent species like deer and road-runners?.”. “Won’t we see anymore these lost local species, as we never saw dinosaurs and mammuts again?. “they say they could have possibly died of starvation among other reasons. Our animal species could also die because of starvation, due to climate change, and by that, shortage of food”, —Estela responded—. “Yes, because the less forest, the less water, the less natural resources, the less possibility for life in our planet!”, -Isabel, a 5th gradeer, commented. “our books on science show different animal species living in our planet many, many years ago, and there were not only dinosaurs, but other kinds of flying animals, fish and mammals, which simply dissappeared, our books read”, —an enthusiastic boy among the group assured—. “They say that turtles have been among the strongest species standing many climate changes over thousands of years on the other side” —Estela added, so as to let children know that animals are very strong and can face many adversities, however, they always need protection and habitat conservation . “Lizzards, turtles, bats, armadillos, they all seem like animals from the time of dinosaurs; we want to protect them, they are so incredibly rare and old species; which exotic species of animals do our friends in the north have there?. Did they have dinosaurs in the past, or mammuts?; we did not have them here, but it is so exciting to hear of them!. Which species do they consider threatened or endangered in the areas where Monarchs are born?”, —others commented—. They were all very noisy making all these questions. On arriving to school that very morning, mothers dropping their children were also very noisy to hear from their own children later, when back from school, what our topic this season would have been.
