SCHOOL VISIT

Dear friends, we continue in “San Jerónimo Pilitas” village, this beautiful location in the back forest areas to Sierra Chincua Sanctuary. Now we have visited the few Middle School students there, and the few Kindergarten children that attended school today, since more than half of them were absent, because their parents got a training today on sustainability at the nearest village they belong to. “San Jerónimo Pilitas” is located right at the border line on the side of the State of México, the Sanctuary is located on the side of the state of Michoacán. Well, Living and Education in the state of México are progressing importantly at the State orientating families, teachers and students to turn their eyes to taking advantage of living on their own resources, financing an amazing variety of possibilities, and by this, reducing pressure on the forests, and reducing the amount of families migrating to our big cities, and even to our two northern countries, Canada and the United States. Many boys and girls did not come to school today since they left with their parents to this nearest village, since this would be a good chance for them to go to town!. “Our Moms will attend a medicine herbs training, since she got so much knowledge on every plant growing in our forest from our grand-ma’s and our great grand-ma’s; our moms are like the doctors for people on our villages and we do an extra-living from that”, —Lilia and Yadira said—. “Well, our parents left to attend training on how to get started in their own trout farms; they are really excited, since besides our cattle and sheep and backyard animals, we will have trouts and this will be an extra-income for us too”, — Noé and Edel said—. Both of them, Kindergarten children and Middle school students insisted we should get our lesson on endangered and threatened species at the courtyard and right there we had an open-air lesson on our topic. Yadira said: “My father assures having seen deer deep in the woods, so perhaps it is not yet totally extinct for us”. “I would say that there are species like our owls, armadillos, a few birds and mammals that might be at least threatened”, —Edel said—. The little children could follow what we were saying and paid close attention to our short talk. Dear friends, our winter has been up to now very, very mild, many times even sunny and warm; very soon any day now, our coldest time of the winter will hit and we shall get ready in advance with enough wood and coal to heat our homes (we shall remember you we have no heating systems at our homes and schools). In the profile of our post here, we show you a typical little, cozy house of most of our local families living in our mountains. They are built, as you can see, are made of wood and are rather medium to very little. The two to three bedrooms in our typical homes mostly warm with the wooden stove heat at the kitchen, since our moms most likely have the fire on the whole day while they are cooking, specially during the winter. Our homes do not have a living room. Hardly this would be planned when building a house, and this would have to get a heating something. No. The kitchen, for most of our families, is the spot were grandpa’s, parents and children and else members of the family sit and tell ancestral stories, anecdotes, knowledge, news in the village, listen to the radio, to typical cheerful music, and nowadays can even watch some t.v. Our kitchens are the cozy area at home where ancestral knowledge and wisdom are passed on from generation to generation.
