SCHOOL VISIT
Dear friends, this is special stop at “Emiliano Zapata” elementary with which we close our visits to the schools located along the back and inside areas of forest to “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary. After so many visits to our local schools now, and among all of the topics related to our local societies and our education system in the region surrounding the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries, what about children with different abilities/capabilities/needs, or special children, —as you may also call them—, in our local society?. Here our situation at facing such cases in our local families and our schools, even though these cases are rather very few. Monarchs’ overwintering sites are located both in territory of the state of Michoacàn, as well as in territory of the state of México. Both states differ importantly in their academical plans on education, as well as in the way they assist such situations in our children. The most common different abilities/needs our children may face are: Brain Paralysis, Down Syndrom, Low Intelectual Learning and Mis-Nutrition situations; children under family stress due to many different reasons are to be assisted too. The academical plan in the state of Michoacán assigns a rather scarce budget to teachers and experts on Special Education, in order to little by little integrate these children and their families to our societies. Given this, our ordinary teachers at any school having such cases, have got to find the way, during their class routines at school, to be able to integrate the special child, to the dynamics of the rest of the group in class. In a few cases, when the child’s affectation is severe, the child shall quit normal school earlier and parents shall look for the way to get specialized assistance at a government (public institution (totally for free), which means leaving to our big cities, not always possible, so the child simply stays at the family. The state of México, on the other hand, assigns a special and steady budget for Teachers experts on Special Education at their elementary schools, when the school shall require such an assistance. Local authorities in the closest bigger towns than our small villages around the Sanctuaries mostly provide some help too, which is mostly first aid assistance, and at least, all transportation needs as well as a basic financial support in case.the family’s decision is to move easily. Campaigns on Nutrition, Child birth control and so many among others are now permanently part of our public health system all over México even at the most remote areas. Our four special children at “Emiliano Zapata” in the small and incredibly beautiful location in “Pancho Maya”, coming from three different nearby small villages, having been assigned an expert on education for them by the state, received your Ambassador Monarchs full of excitment and enthusiasm, and had an incredible time playing the “Web of Life” game, through which they perfectly got the sense of the visit of the Symbolic Migration program to their location!.
