THE VISIT

The Symbolic Migration goes on this very interesting visit at University “Benito Juárez” for Sustainable Living, and after having presented the lesson of the season, “The Benefits of Trees”, to a first classroom of first-year students, learning, through this visit, much more on the phenomenon of Monarchs overwintering in our region and the importance of preserving our Oyamel-tree Forests, a second group awaiting, second-year students to the career on Agro-Nutrition Processes, volunteered immediately after introducing the Symbolic Migration, going over the generalities of Monarch’s life-cycle and migration assisted by Estela, the presenter.  Right here, an extremely important topic arose for all of us, since, as second-year students to their career, they have already started to go deeply into topics of the extreme importance to our local ecosystem: Soil, Canopy and Prairies Restoration all over the three Sanctuaries surroundings: “El Rosario” (the largest colony), “Sierra Chincua” and “Cerro Pelón”, the two second largest colonies in population of Monarch butterflies. “We have lost and continue losing symbolic species of wild plants and flowers, among them, medicinal herbs;  we could still be on time to rescue most of them!”;  “we have lost several species of wild animals too, such as wild rabbits, coyotes, armadillos, road-runners, salamanders, water snakes, frogs and toads…”;   “we can see how bare and even dry what our grand-parents describe as large prairies in the past, look now, including river-sides”;   “then, in our forest, our teachers, engineers in agronomy and biologists, tell us that Oyamel trees grow faster and stronger depending on how abundant and healthy the canopy around them is”, --students took turns at participating mentioning this and that aspect.  At going over the color-printed slides of our local forest trees and their scientific and common names as well as our local fruit trees, and assisting ourselves on two of our donated books “Arboles” and “Escucha Hablar a los Arboles”,  we all concluded that the restoration and recovery of all of this aspects at the Monarch’s overwintering Sanctuaries  in our region,  depends absolutely on keeping our forests healthy, since it is from our ancestral trees from where every aspect of our local ecosystem absolutely depends on, due to the large list of functions and benefits that trees play on its own health. Students were really excited at appreciating their Ambassador Monarchs and marveled at seeing at each map accompanying each ambassador the pathway of each, trying to figure out the long way each Ambassador flew by plane to reach our towns!. It was indescribable to hear a voice amidst the crowd shouting that a Symbolic Monarch had come from India!. “Estela, tell them that we just cannot imagine how they did to send their Symbolic Monarch here!. Which destinations did it pass by to reach us? Was it only one single flight bringing it to México?. Thanks to Madhavan Home School, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India!, Woooooow, wooow…..” ! expressions of admiration blended all together in chorus, until the echo of surprise and enjoyment died out very slowly at the admiration of the whole group loving our visit today!. Thank you, Bhooma!
