Local rivers tell of our forests

THE VISIT

A next group, fourth-year students, awaited for the Symbolic Migration bringing your Ambassador Monarchs to them too!. An extraordinary group, whose students’ families mostly make a living from farming in the region and forest resources, showed how knowledgeable they are about several aspects of our living, including the main aspects of the Monarchs’ life-cycle. They did enjoy going over the names of our 10 local forest trees, and the 10-11 local fruit trees growing some in orchards, but also wild in our region. We would stress the importance of trees in our forests: “The better our ancestral trees and their self-restoration in diminished forest areas be, the healthier our rivers, springs and underground water storage shall be”;  “our rivers have drastically reduced their water flow over the last decades; a clear signal of the diminishing of our forests in spite of the efforts of conservation, as well as the effects of the global climate change, which we will only revert reinforcing conservation actions, following the popular saying: “if you give a fish to a man, he will eat one day, but if you teach him how to fish, he will eat his whole life”.  “Trees, trees, trees… there is where key solution to the rescuing of our local ecosystems resides, definitely”,  --Students took turns doing all of the former participations and wonderfully took over Estela’s role as presenter little by little--.   We ended up reminding each other that it is up here, just above us, at one of the highest points of “Sierra Chincua” Sanctuary mountains, where one of the two main river flows providing water to the whole complex of water supply to México City and surrounding towns and industry, is born:  The “Balsas” river.   That how important our legendary trees in these ancestral forests are. Rivers in our areas are determinant for Monarchs to survive, since they settle mostly near to water sources, being water a main source of survival for them, together with nectar of wild flowers.
