Trees, the response to habitat conservation
THE VISIT
The Symbolic Migration closes its visit at University for Sustainable living “Benito Juárez” with the last group left at the school, third-year students to their career, Agro-Nutrition Processes. In this class, half of the students coming from far away towns and villages, seemed to be not quite familiar with many aspects on the Monarch butterfly life-cycle and migration, this latter considered as the most complex migration phenomenon in the animal kingdom, for which the Symbolic Migration went into these aspects to them. They got the whole explanation repeating: “So, 4 to even 5 generations are born all along the breeding corridors from south-east USA to south-east Canada; the first three generations living an average of a two-month life-span (from egg to adult) and the fourth and fifth a long eight to nine month life in order to live enough to accomplish their migration mission to our regions in order to spend a rather warm winter in Central México”; --one to two students would summarize for the rest of the class--. “it shall be the great-great grandchildren accomplishing this ancestral mission every fall” –one more participant added--. “because of microclimate conditions, they overwinter at our Oyamel mountains, being their conservation and restoration, crucial for the species habitat” --a girl in the class emphatically concluded--. “But now, what will happen, since our climate conditions are so drastically changing the last few years?; we no longer have those cold and rainy winters of several years ago” -- a boy in the class stated--. “Our grand-parents say we no longer have the abundant 6-month period of intense rain and storms from summer to fall that our grandparents say we used to have up to only one decade ago” --another boy, extremely interested and well informed, expressed--. “Will Monarchs adjust to these new conditions, or will they necessarily require their ancestral habitat to continue overwintering in our Oyamel trees?” These students were indeed clear about the exceptional phenomenon of Monarchs’ life and migration facts, as well were able to do key questions, which responses all led to our trees, the urgent recovery of tree population in our Forests. Every benefit we all could tell about our forest trees and fruit trees would lead us to the answer to every question: “Trees for a healthy ecosystem, that is the answer to every challenge our threatened or endangered ecosystems face nowadays”. This was the enthusiastic participation of this last group of students at this University. This visit shall be closed commenting to our blog audience that this university will be strictly focused on subjects all along the four-year career on subjects focused on biology, agronomy, nutrition sciences, the rescue of ancestral heritage on agricultural practices, ancestral local family organization, nutrition habits and ancestral medicine and indigenous language rescue, most to be learned by our own local families, all aiming towards managing an integral, sustainable living alternative in our region, with the conviction that the future of every nation is at its own self-sustainability. One hundred Universities under this concept are being created all over the country. The Monarch Butterfly Fund and Monarchs Across Georgia book donation could not be but generous at the extraordinary concept of this University preparing many of the future Ejidatario generations in which hands the preservation of this local natural reserve shall be.
