The largest and richest book donation in our history!
THE VISIT
Because of the ancestral cultural life and traditions of our local families in small villages and towns in México, moms and grandmas are the main physical figures to our children’s upbringing and education until they reach the age at 18.
Nowadays, even though a small percentage of our mothers in “El Rosario” area have a job or run a small business at the Sanctuaries’ facilities bringing their children with them during the tourism season while waiting for schools to open again, it is a reason of pride for each mom to run her home and family. They make their homes beautiful, decorated, cozy houses. They make sure that their families become proud heirs of our culture, language and traditions. Our lives do no run with long working periods of time a day. The basic things for a living are mostly at reach and close to home. Family time means basic feed-back each day to each member in the family group about life in the community. Moms and grandmas are the center of the family gathering.
“When off-season, dad and grandpa shall be most likely working away in big cities visiting our families a couple of weekends a month, but from November through March, we all get big smiles, since our men at home shall stay for the season preparing everything to welcome the Monarchs, one mom said.
So, here brave and responsible mothers educating, while brave and responsible dads work hard at the Sanctuary to provide for the family.
We should once again highlight in this post, that the book donation made from Monarchs Across Georgia during all these years, has been absolutely determinant for the program and greatly appreciated by teachers as an extremely useful additional didactic material to reinforce students’ learning on many, many more and deeper aspects on conservation.
Besides the Monarchs Across Georgia donation, this year, our students and teachers around the Monarchs’ overwintering spots got another great surprise at receiving additional book titles though a Monarch Butterfly Fund grant. Thirty copies each of two fantastic titles “ARBOLES” and “ESCUCHA HABLAR A LOS ARBOLES” were purchased with a portion of the grant funds. One or two titles per visit through the Symbolic Migration season have been the ideal complement to our topic of the year: “Los Beneficios de los Arboles”. The variety of titles has been the richest season in offering this invaluable, supportive material to our schools, our teachers and above all, our students, as future responsible for Monarchs’ overwintering spots in México.
“Students text books at schools approach conservation topics in a rather generalized way, and especially for us living in a Natural Reserve, we need to go much deeper in knowledge of our local natural resources, so that we know how to care of it,” one of the three very young, recently graduated teachers to these children added.
“We need to get more knowledge on our own region, on nature. We need to understand that we are the ones responsible for caring the treasure that we have with the Monarch butterflies and our forests!” a very interested and concerned older mother expressed in class while she held one of our beautiful book title donations at our presentation today.
On behalf of our community teachers, parents and students, our deepest appreciation for this invaluable contribution to our children’s’ education in the region!
