Tree roots to keep them tight and upright!

THE VISIT

Children nine years of age and older can well understand a vital and concerning aspect of our forests characteristics and conditions, and how our community and town life depends on it. The aspect is our impressively steep mountains.

Dear friends, as part of our daily lesson around the Monarch Sanctuaries student population, children from the above mentioned ranking ages have listened to Estela:

“We live in a particular, beautiful mountain region which one hundred years ago was nearly covered by forest trees all over. However, climate change and deforestation with not enough reforestation actions have changed over the years, our living conditions.

Dense forest covering our mountains guaranteed, for over a hundred years water storage beneath our mountains through excellent filtration that only trees can do. Flora, fauna and agriculture used to be abundant, with well defined climate cycles. What is extremely important as well is that besides the impressively strong roots of our forest trees kept our high, steep humid mountains all the time tight-upright making landslides impossible to happen.

Nowadays, our mountains are absent of trees in areas. Humidity, and as a consequence, the proper filtration and storage of water beneath the ground is rather scarce.

Erosion and dry loose earth with dead roots are not keeping our mountains tight. This situation is concerning in terms of our own living security, both for our families living way up to the top of our mountains, as well as for Angangueo and Ocampo towns, which have been settled at the very canyon’s bottom of our once millenary heavily dense forested mountains,” Estela concluded.
