Gaining a tremendous future...
THE VISIT
Dear friends,
Not attending our classes indoors at school and wandering around our own locations shall make us ask ourselves: “Have we really lost one year’s education?”
Estela has had time with parents and students at the end of each visit, and would like to share a written text by a Spanish educator trying to paraphrase it on purpose of the sanitary emergency that have kept our families longer times together.
“What if our children shall acquire permanent responsibilities at home either cleaning, cooking, repairing, turning dead areas into functional one? What if they shall learn by heart our ancestral cultural and family stories, songs and mother language from our grandparents? What if instead of learning science, they shall learn how to grow a vegetable crop or to raise a backyard animal and care of it permanently? What if they learn that pets are one more member of our family? What if they learn that working as a family team is part of our community system? What if instead of trying to understand technology development, they try to understand how internet works in the forest? What if we teach them to read the moon in its different stages and its meaning to our ancestral cultures? What if we learn to sort out garbage at home, to obligately read a few pages of a book until its end? What if we adults remind ourselves that we are borrowing our planet from our children and and not inheriting it from our ancestors? Perhaps we would not be losing a school year, but we could be gaining a tremendous future.”
Family gatherings have been part of the Symbolic Migration visits, where little children get acquainted to the most simple concepts of nature and its conservation and the fantastic phenomenon of a migrating species needing their winter homes intact and protected.
