At each class visit, as we discuss butterfly and moth metamorphosis, a question arises:
Which other animals living nearby undergo metamorphosis?
“Toads, frogs, and salamanders! They go through complete metamorphosis (egg, tadpole or larva, toadlet or froglet or juvenile, and adult). Our salamander, axolotl or ‘samborojo’ is unique. It retains its gills and remains in the water as an adult. This special development is called ‘paedomorphosis’.” Students were amazed at these facts.
The purity of the water in the springs, wells, and creeks in our Oyamel fir forests makes our region distinctive in having such species breeding wild around our own homes!
