It is very important that your Ambassador Monarchs be delivered to middle and high school students.
When these students reach the legal age of 18, they will be ready to represent their Ejidatario parents and grandparents within their own Ejido. They will begin in-depth learning about the organizational structure and responsibilities of guarding their land and Oyamel forests. They will gain knowledge about the organizations and government institutions with whom they must interact in their efforts to restore habitat and conserve forests for the protection of Monarchs.
“I think I will only complete my high school studies and then dedicate myself to taking over my Grandpa’s role with his Ejidatario title. For me, it is an exciting lifetime role that awakens a real passion in me,” Eduardo, the oldest grandson to an ejidatario family, expressed.
“Even though we women in an ejidatario family cannot directly bear an ejidatario title, we can fulfill complementary roles related to guarding our land, forests and its benefits, like tasks assisting visitors with cooking, being guides, or running a small business at the Sanctuaries’ facilities, included attending our assembly meetings. On the other side, our activities cannot have anything to do with the official Ejido decision-making. Since ancestral times, only our men can assume such responsibilities by bearing Ejidatario titles” Maricarmen stated.
265 Ejidatarios and their families at El Rosario Sanctuary have been guarding the Monarch overwintering sites for over four decades now. Around 70 percent of these young students shall, for different reasons, not reach the university level and will remain in their homeland. The Mexican state offers a variety of projects and programs to local Ejidatario families for the conservation and protection of these forests and our precious migrating species.
In the photos, the colossal Oyamel fir forests of El Rosario Sanctuary stand tall. They are mankind’s natural legacy and high responsibility for the next generations.
