At the same time that the Monarchs arrive each fall, we harvest.

Today we reflected on corn - how it continues to be the base in our daily meals, once the grain is processed and turned into dough to prepare tortillas.  Our creole corn with its beautiful colors is seasonal and does not need irrigation due to the excellent humidity levels that our land provides and our adequate rainy season!

Corn was domesticated from a grass called teocintle by the peoples of Meso-America approximately ten thousand years ago. For Mexico, maize is not a crop but a deep cultural symbol intrinsic to daily life.

Corn was the Aztecs' main source of nutrition, and because an abundant harvest was vital, people would worship the god of rain, Tlaloc, at the Temple of Agriculture to encourage adequate moisture for their corn crops. They also worshipped the god of corn, Cinteótl, and the corn goddess, Chicomencóatl, at numerous ceremonies.
