“We build our homes and construct new roads on it, use its water resources, and in order to meet food demand, we cut the natural vegetation to raise cattle and develop our corn plantations,” students listed as some of the ways that soil came into play as part of their family life.
“We use soil in so many ways but tend to overlook its significance. Let us not forget that SOIL represents a finite and precious resource for our survival,” Estela reminded students.
Symbolic Migration donated beautifully illustrated material on the specific flora and fauna in our Monarchs’ Oyamel winter forests this season. This was made possible through a generous grant from the Monarch Butterfly Fund. Books related to the topic of soil were also donated to each classroom visited as a part of this grant and monetary donations made through Monarchs Across Georgia’s Mexico Book Project.
A brief outdoor digging activity in the school yard immediately showed the soil’s water retention, which will benefit nectar resources available for Monarchs during the winter.
Monarchs have inspired art all over the region awakening in teachers, students and our local society an extraordinary way to share the uniqueness of our region and the encourage its conservation. Teachers and students at Cerro Pelón Sanctuary, in Macheros community participate in renewing decoration at their welcoming entrance arch to visitors this season!.
