Students at every school in Ziráhuato and San Felipe have been learning additional facts about the significance and richness of the soil and, by extension, the importance of protecting and conserving their homeland’s biodiversity.
“Leaving a fallen tree trunk to decompose in the forest, turns into one of the richest combinations of mushrooms and bacteria that soil can get.” (Dr. Lincoln P. Brower)
Life in Ziráhuato is peaceful. Agriculture, religious festivities, and school life define every family’s day.
For students living outside of the village proper, using public transportation will take perhaps 10 minutes and cost only 10 pesos (50 cents). Most of our local students in the region walk to school which may take 10-30 minutes depending on the distance.
Curiously, bicycles are little used. Because of the dense population, the abundance of inexpensive public transportation made it a source of employment and the main means of transportation in the region.
