It is extremely important to remind our students how unique and limited our Oyamel fir forests in Central México are. Due to exclusive climate conditions, humidity, altitude, soil, and sun-angle conditions, and perhaps even geomagnetic clues, these forests developed and evolved thousands of years ago.

“The protected Biosphere Reserve where the migrating Monarchs roost in the winter encompasses 56,200 hectares of Oyamel fir forests. They are considered among the largest forests of their type remaining on planet Earth,” Estela reminded.

“Forest and Flora, both are vital for the equilibrium of the climate in our area, as well as for the survival of animal species, especially pollinators,” a young girl in the class concluded brilliantly.

Most of our students and teachers find it incredible that a thick book has been written on the flora existing in our Oyamel forests!

“Here our famous Oyamel tree, Encinilla, Flor de San Juan, Cardo. Here they are with their common names included, just as we know them!”
