To transport pollen, many plants depend on the wind, some on water, but many depend on animals, particularly on insects, which are rewarded with their sweet nectar while distributing pollen from flower to flower.

Over time, plants evolved and developed incredible strategies to attract insects, beginning with their colors and fragrances.

Over time, science on the exceptional migration of Monarch Butterflies has evolved and taken a significant step forward.

Last week, the Project Monarch Collaboration, a Trinational Research and Conservation effort including World Wildlife Fund (WWF) -México, Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (MBBR), led by Cellular Tracking Technologies (CTT) and the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center in Cape May, New Jersey, sent a team to Mexico. CTT is the creator of the solar-powered Blu+ Morpho transmitters described in this New York Times article.

Measuring weight and recording the conditions of wings and abdomens, as well as gender, a database was created for butterflies receiving the solar-powered Blu+ Morpho transmitter at each of the three largest Monarch colonies. This happened just in time as the gradual, but massive departure of the real Monarch Butterflies begins with the unusually warm temperatures here.
