"What do Monarchs mean to you?"
THE STORY
Every season, Symbolic Migration runs into mothers and young grandmothers born and living throughout the winter forests of the GREAT MONARCH MIGRATION.
“Monarchs became the center of our living in the region. However, 2-3 decades ago, as summer ended and October arrived, we remember watching our parents and grandparents staring up to the sky, assuring the butterflies would appear any moment. We could not understand why there was such a great expectation among them. Another unusual atmosphere of whispers and comments, but of rather sightings and silence, happened as the spring approached.”
“A few first foreign visitors had already started to appear. I remember them once asking us local children what Monarchs meant to us. We did not know how to respond! Neither our parents! Why would a butterfly be at all special?”
“Sometime later, we started to receive handfuls of precious, colorful paper butterflies with hanging ribbons, tiny crochet details, glowing sparkles of modern paint, postcards, illustrations… all specially decorated to be sent to us from boys and girls from schools in the United States and Canada who lived where these flocks of vibrant orange butterflies came from!” Mother Heréndira said.
“I used to have my boy and girl cousins down and away in other towns attending elementary, just as I and my siblings living up here in the mountains. When we visited and we asked them how they had liked their paper butterflies and their messages sent to them, they assured us they were not receiving these wonderful gifts as we did!”
“Well, we very soon learned these hand-designed butterflies were EXCLUSIVELY for us boys and girls, children and grandchildren of the families living and guarding these millenary forests where real Monarchs came to overwinter since hundreds, even thousands of years!” Mother Lupita continued.
“Now, we are wives and husbands, children and grandchildren, and heirs to these ancestral forests, FIRST GENERATIONS REALLY STARTING to UNDERSTAND the U N B E L I E V A B L E LIFE CYCLE OF MONARCHS and of our OYAMEL FIR FORESTS WHICH ARE SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF IT!
“Nowadays, our children arrive home after school in the winter, speaking to us about the importance of a healthy soil, native plants, water, climate equilibrium, mushrooms, their favorite hero pollinators, and our beautiful monster, our endemic salamander! Our children continue to be part of this unique, large school community with Canada and the United States.”
“ALL THIS, THANKS to MONARCHS and THANKS to our AMBASSADOR BUTTERFLIES. The Ambassadors are a treasure and the only effort made at our schools to bring our children to a much closer view of their own LOCAL natural patrimony, which they shall inherit from us. We were once those school children to whom, when asked what Monarchs meant to us, hesitated, spoke a few words, and sometimes simply ran away!”
“Today, a radio program has come to interview our children, leaving a lifetime memory for them, thanks to their Ambassador Butterflies being so famous where they come from!” Mother Gabriela completed.

Cada temporada, la Migración Simbólica encuentra madres y jóvenes abuelas que nacieron y vivien en los bosques de hibernación de la GRAN MIGRACIÓN MONARCA.
“Las Monarcas se convirtieron en el centro de nuestra vida en la región. Sin embargo, hace 2-3 décadas, en cuanto terminaba el verano y entraba Octubre, veíamos a nuestros padres y abuelos ver fijamente al cielo, asegurando que las mariposas aparecerían en cualquier momento. No podíamos entender porqué había tanta expectación entre ellos. Otro ambiente igualmente inusual de comentarios, pero más bien de suspiros y silencio se daba en cuanto se acercaba la primavera.”
“Los primeros visitantes extranjeros empezaban a asomar. Yo recuerdo que una vez nos preguntaban a los niños lo que las Monarcas significaban para nosotros. ¡No sabíamos que responder! ¡Tampoco nuestros Papás! ¿Porqué tendría que ser especial una mariposa?.
“Tiempo después, comenzamos a recibir montones de preciosas, coloridas mariposas con listones de colores colgando, pequeños detalles de estambre, pintura con brillo, postales, ilustraciones… todo especialmente decorado para enviarnos a nosotros de niños y niñas de escuelas desde los Estados Unidos y Canadá que vivían en las regiones de donde estas mariposas de vibrante color naranja venían!” Dijo la Mamá Heréndira.
“Yo tenía mis primos y primas abajo en los pueblos que también iban a la escuela primaria, tal como yo y mis hermanos que vivíamos aca arriba en el monte. Cuando los visitábamos y les preguntábamos cuánto les habían gustado sus mariposas de papel y sus mensajes, ellos nos aseguraban que no recibían estos increíbles regalos de que nosotros hablábamos”
“Pues bien, muy pronto aprendimos. que éstas mariposas de papel elaboradas a mano eran EXCLUSIVAMENTE para nosotros los niños y niñas, hijos y nietos de las familias que vivian y conservaban esos bosques milenarios donde las Monarcas de verdad venían a hibernar desde hacía cientos, incluso miles de años! Continúo la otra mamá, Lupita.
“Ahora, nosotras somos esposas y esposos, hijos y nietos y herederos de estos bosques ancestrales, de las PRIMERAS GENERACIONES QUE REALMENTE EMPEZARON a ENTENDER el I N C R E I B L E CICLO DE VIDA DE LAS MONARCAS y de NUESTROS BOSQUES DE OYAMEL QUE SON PARTE TAN IMPORTANTE DE ELLO!”
“Hoy en día, nuestros hijos llegan a casa después de la escuela, hablándonos de la importancia de tener una tierra saludable, plantas nativas, agua, equilibrio en nuestro clima, hongos, de su polinizador héroe y de nuestro “monstruo hermoso”, nuestra Salamandra endémica! Nuestros hijos continúan siendo parte de esta única, gran comunidad escolar con Canadá y los Estados Unidos!”
“TODO ESTO, GRACIAS a LAS MONARCAS y GRACIAS a nuestras MARIPOSAS EMBAJADORAS. Las Embajadoras son un tesoro y el único esfuerzo que se hace en nuestras escuelas para acercar a nuestros hijos a una visión mucho más cercana de su propio patrimonio natural LOCAL, que a su vez heredarán de nosotros. Nosotros fuimos alguna vez esos niños de escuela a quienes, cuando alguna vez se nos preguntó que significaban para nosotros las Monarcas, dudábamos, decíamos unas cuantas palabras, y algunas veces simplemente nos echábamos a correr!”
“Hoy, un programa de radio ha venido a entrevistarlos, dejándoles una recuerdo, gracias a sus Mariposas Embajadoras tan famosas allá de donde vienen” Gabriela, la otra joven mamá, completó.
