SCHOOL VISIT.-

We can say that most elementary public schools, not to say all, bear the name of a person who heroically contributed to our independence over two hundred years ago, and to our cultural and filantropic life as an independent nation including many foreigner personalities. Mr. Vicente Guerrero was one of them, an independence hero. This school is within the fourth closest elementary schools to “El Rosario” Monarchs Sanctuary, the largest of all three main Sanctuaries. The population of children in this area might be the largest compared to the other two Sanctuaries’ surroundings. A few schools have got a double shift journal with six grades with around 15-20 pupils in each class. This is an only morning shift school. Public schools are all free in our country. Children attend classes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a 30 minute break at noon to get a snack which children bring from home. Today, children enthusiastically participated in reflecting about our topic of the season: “threatened, endangered and extinct animal species in our forests”. “My grandpa goes to the forest at least twice a week, and tells us about how abundant armadillos and rabbits and some bird species used to be”, —a girl from 4th grade stated—..”My aunts and uncles say that our climate used to be colder too, that it used to rain very much and it was much colder than it is now”, —two 5th graders added—”. “So our Oyamel tree forests should have been much richer than they are now” —another amounted—. They learned how important Salamandras are signaling the existance of excelent levels of humidity and the purity of water, for example; they also got to know how important humidity levels is vital for all insects, which they never imagined. The class concluded with how important it is to protect the plant and animal species which we still can see around after having lost a few species since a couple of decades now like deer and runaways, for the nowadays generations. “Every time my grandma is cooking at home, she speaks about a variety of wild potatos they used to call “papas juilonas”; she says they were collected in the big meadow-spots in between the forest and that they were far more delicious that the ones we know and eat now; she suspects that chemical fertilizers could have swept them away”, —Vanesa assured with certain sadness and frustration to her own classmates"—. Socially, most moms to these children dedicate themselves to running their homes and families; fathers are the official providers to the family. So moms bring and pick up their children every day to school with no need to use any means of transportations, since their homes are scattered around at only a few hundreds of meter or a few kilometers from the school facilities. Paying the “Web of life” game, getting to fully know the words “habitat”, “ecosystem” and the vital connection in themselves, seems to have reiforced childrens’ idea of their own location’s existance, benefits and limitations as well.
