Pedro Ascencio students live at the very core of the Sierra Chincua Sanctuary. This is one of the few unique places within the 56,200 hectares of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere where Ajolotes (axolotls) breed.

“Here is our native Ajolote on the poster! Most of them in the creek now are very small. They will grow as spring comes. Their colors can range from dark green or brown, to dark blue with golden dots. They are gorgeous!”

“White Ajolotes? How does that happen? We have not seen a white Ajolote here yet! They are so incredible too!. Why are they white? “ students questioned as they looked at other species pictured on the poster.

Out to the beautiful meadows, we went on our exciting expedition.

“Teacher Estelita, since our native Ajolotes can regenerate their organs or body parts, if sometime in the future we humans can get DNA from them, would we be able to regenerate parts of our body and pass on this trait to our children?” Bruno asked

“Does this mean that just as Monarchs come to hibernate in our forests because our Oyamel fir trees generate a micro-climate there, these waters could also have a micro-climate, or components in them that allow the Ajolotes to thrive? Might our forests also be responsible for this as well? “ students asked.

“So unique are our forests!” Estela responded.

Alondra, one student in the class, could even carefully hold a baby Axolotl in her hand for a few seconds before putting it back in the pure, clear waters.

Los estudiantes de la primaria Pedro Ascencio vivien en el corazón del Santuario Sierra Chincua. Este es uno de los pocos y únicos lugares dentro de las 56,200 hectáreas dentro de la Biósfera de las Mariposas Monarcas donde se reproducen los Ajolotes (Axolotl)

“Aquí nuestros Ajolotes nativos en el póster! La mayoría de ellos en los arroyos están muy pequeños ahorita y crecerán a medida que se acerque la primavera. Sus colores van desde el verde intenso o café hasta el azul marino con manchas doradas. Son impresionantes!

“Ajolotes Blancos? Cómo es que eso sucede¡? Aqui nosotros no hemos visto un solo Ajolote Albino hasta ahora!, son tan increíbles también!. Porqué son blancos? “ Preguntaron los alumnos mientras obseraban otras especies ilustradas en el póster.

Y así salimos afuera a los hermosos llanos a nuestra emocionante búsqueda en la naturaleza

“Maestra Estelita, puesto que nuestros Ajolotes Nativos pueden regenerar sus miembros y sus órganos, si alguna vez en el futuro a nosotros los humanos se nos puede implantar ADN de ellos, podríamos regenerar partes de nuestro cuerpo y pasar esta función a nuestros hijos?” Preguntó Bruno.

Todo esto quiere decir que así como las Monarcas vienen a hibernar in nuestros bosques porque nuestros árboles de Oyamel generan un micro-clima ahí, éstas aguas también pudieran tener un micro-clma o componentes que permiten a los Ajolotes vivir aquí? Podrían nuestros bosques tener una relación importante con esto"? Preguntaron los estudiantes.

.Alondra, una estudiante de la clase, pudieron sostener por unos segundos un Ajolote pequeño en su mano antes de regresarlo al agua pura y cristalina.
